Not your ordinary cake...

Years ago, we lived in a house on a little street with a typical corner shop and post office which eventually closed down. It remained empty for quite a long time. We moved on to another house but each time I passed by that empty shop I thought what a nice little place it could be and imagined how lovely it would be to open "vintage style" corner shop. Some time later as I was going by, I saw that someone had taken over the shop and was doing just that, providing a corner shop with a difference. The lady who runs the shop has given it quite a makeover and has foods beautifully displayed.

She sells some of the basics which the people on the street would need on a regular basis but she also sells an amazing ecclectic variety of specialty and gourmet foods.

I have often seen beautiful cakes displayed in the window but a few weeks ago I spotted one of the most wonderful cakes I have ever seen. I said to Paul, "stop the car, pull over, I must see that cake!" but each time, we have been on our way to pick up our little girl from school and just didnt have the time to stop. Today though, we went a little early and stopped by the shop. Of course I had my camera and I took some photos to share with you. The cakes are made upstairs from the main shop by The utterly sexy cafe .

All the cakes were superb but it is the birdcage cake that really caught my eye. The beautiful colours, the roses and Wisteria styled flowers, the delicate bars of the cage and the beautiful bird, what a wonderful creation don't you think?

The cake looks beautiful, I wonder how much it would cost?

That is one gorgeous cake, it's such a pity that you don't see many shops like this anymore.

Hi Kelly,

What a fantastic shop - and it's great that the premises are no longer empty.

That cake is just beautiful! I've never seen one as lovely as that - what a special surprise that would be!!

Hi Kelly

Absolutely fabulous - and so is the website. Better than being let loose in a sweetie shop!

Hi Kelly,
What a wonderful shop - so lovely to see the owners really caring about the interior as well as what they sell. (I love the little green zig-zag shelf trims.)
And the cake - wow! Their website is fabulous too - so special that they serve their fantastic confectionery on vintage china!

Enjoy the rest of your weekend,

Hi, what a wonderful cake...in a fascinating shop. I wish we had one like this in our village. I'm ever hopeful though, because the old textile mill is in the process of being made into apartments and there are supposed to be some shops in part of the building. Here's hoping we get something like yours.

That's adorable, she did a fantastic job. I'm wondering though how you would cut it to serve it, that seems hard. We have a little cake-bakery/ decorating-store around the corner from me so I get to stop and checkout the window displays when I'm out walking, always something interesting. Yesterday they had a wedding cake styled with a black and white diamond pattern. Never seen black used before.

That cake is amazing! No wonder it kept catching your eye as you were passing. It's so pretty. I love the idea of an old fashioned corner shop. I hope more and more of these types of places start to spring up. It's about time the supermarkets got some competition!

I would like to think the cake is sponge with buttercream and raspberry jam in layers throughout.....Beautiful for a wedding.
Let's hope the locals will buy from her and keep the shop going.

Hi Kelly, great to see more posts from you. I love these kind of shops, and like you, would like to own one, if only I had the money. I have looked up the cafe website and these cakes are fabulous works of art, I have always dreamed of having the cupcake idea, if I ever get married that is! Quite a comedy sketch imagining you and your other half in the car with brakes screeching to stop to take a look! x

A lovely shop and that cake! Well the cake is just amazing, I wouldn't want to cut into it in case I hurt the bird, but then again....

what an amzingly beautiful cake- the work that has gone into it! It would be a shame to cut it. Its such a shame that more and more independant businesses are shutting- good for you that you're giving it such support!
